Henry Rand Hatfield was a pioneer in accounting and an early entrant in the Accounting Hall of Fame. In 1904, he was hired by the University of California at Berkeley as the first full-time accounting professor in the country and in 1916 became the second Dean of the College of Commerce. Hatfield played a leading role in the founding of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and the national honor society Beta Gamma Sigma. He also published the first paper in the United States on accounting theory.
